Physical wellbeing

Physical wellbeing is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get the most out of our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. It includes taking care of our bodies and recognizing that our daily habits and behaviours have a significant impact on our overall health, wellbeing and quality of life.

Physical health and mental health are strongly connected. Taking care of your physical health is scientifically shown to improve mental wellbeing, and vice versa. If one declines, the other can be affected too.

A balanced diet, proper sleep, and cutting down unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol, and drugs are some of the key physical health factors that can promote mental wellbeing. Similarly, some of the things that can affect mental wellbeing are stress, working too much, and being too inactive.

How do you achieve physical wellbeing?

Since physical wellbeing has many components there are limitless ways to improve it. For example:

  • eating well
  • exercising
  • getting enough sleep
  • staying hydrated
  • drinking in moderation
  • don’t forget to laugh until it hurts from time to time!

The challenge is getting real about where you are physically and setting realistic goals to get you where you want to be.

  • commit to a healthy diet
  • limit snacking
  • drink plenty of water
  • move more; take the stairs and add walking breaks to your day
  • get plenty of sleep
  • limit alcohol use; alcohol is high in calories and may worsen health conditions common among older adults
  • avoid tobacco products.

Everyone is encouraged to get a Heart Health Check. A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute health assessment of your heart and associated risk factors. It measures your risk of heart attack over the next few years and how you can reduce this risk. Your doctor can do this quickly and simply.

An annual Heart Health Check is recommended by the Heart Foundation for everyone 45 years and older. Also, try to:

  1. Quit smoking
  2. Follow a healthy balanced diet
  3. Be active
  4. Maintain a healthy weight
  5. Limit alcohol intake
  6. See a GP and do a Heart Health Check (if recommended)

You can discuss with a GP other risk factors including high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and family medical history.

The good news is you can take positive steps to reduce the risk with the help of your doctor.

Hydration

Experts suggest we consume approximately 8 standard glasses (2 litres) of water each day. Some of us can  find this difficult so need to establish a routine or set up reminders to ensure we are taking in adequate water to remain hydrated – especially as we exercise and during the warmer months of the year.

Staying hydrated by drinking enough water is one aspect of good physical, emotional, and mental health.

Your HSE Manager can also provide advice if you require support.
