Hazardous Substances

What is a hazardous substance?

A hazardous substance is a substance which has the potential, through being used, to harm the health or safety of people in the workplace. They are classified according to their long term health effects.

Where would I be likely to find a hazardous substance?

Typically in Aspen Medical we would find some hazardous substances in our kitchenettes, cleaning cupboards and also in our clinics. You will possibly also find them in your home, with your kitchen and bathroom cleaning products, gardening products and so forth.

Substances that are potentially hazardous will have warning notices on their labels such as below. At work we provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) which are stored mainly in our kitchens. These SDS provide us with all the necessary information on how to use the product safely and what to do in the event of a spillage or exposure. If in doubt, have a chat with your local health and safety representative or the HSE Team.

How do we manage our hazardous substances?

Aspen Medical manages its hazardous substances via a sound risk management approach. Initially, a risk assessment is conducted; appropriate controls are identified and implemented. A chemical register is established for each site/work group. In addition, anyone using hazardous substances should undergo appropriate training in the safe use and storage.

Site inspections are conducted quarterly and include a review of the control of hazardous substances storage and waste. To ensure effective management of our chemicals, audits are conducted annually.

Your HSE Manager can also provide advice if you require support.
