Safe Driving

Aspen Medical recognises that driving for work is one of the highest risks to our team members. To mitigate this, there are processes and procedures in place to ensure our team members arrive at their destination safely.

Safe Driving

If you are going to be driving for work please read the Safe Driving SOP(AMHSE15).

Drivers of any Aspen Medical owned or leased vehicle will comply with all relevant State and Territory legislation and Regulations for the use of the vehicle, including:

  • Not driving if above the legal blood alcohol limit for alcohol
  • Not using mobile phones whilst driving, unless hads free
  • Abiding by speed limits
  • Wearing a seatbelt

Team members and contractors who wish to use their private vehicles for duty purposes are to ensure the following:

  • They have authorisation from their manager
  • The vehicle is privately insured, and the insurance remains current (Aspen bears no responsibility for any vehicle damage)

Plan your Journey

This document helps you identify and mitigate any potential driving hazards. It also provides you with the Journey Management Plan which must be completed and signed off prior to your journey.

Some important steps you need to take before you head off are:

  • Check the status of your vehicle – is it in good working condition, adequate fuel or capacity to refill along the way and tyres have adequate tread?
  • Ensure you are in a fit state to commence and undertake the journey
  • Schedule in your rest breaks every two hours to ensure you stay alert
  • Carry the necessary emergency contact numbers in the case of an emergency

For journeys longer than 2 hours, you need to complete a HSE Journey Management Plan (AMHSEF29)  and have it signed off by your manager.

The dangers of Driver Fatigue

What if I have an accident while driving?

All incidents involving vehicles shall be reported in accordance with the HSE Reporting and Investigation Procedure (AMHSE01).

  • In the event of a serious incident the Police are to be informed
  • Inform your manager as soon as practical (within 24 hours)
  • If injured, you may be entitled to lodge a claim for Workers’ Compensation

Your HSE Manager can also provide advice if you require support.
